Connecticut bookends the entire fifty-year history of New England witch trials, beginning with the 1647 execution of Alice Young in Windsor and concluding in 1697 with the region’s final trial of Winifred Benham Sr. and Jr. in Wallingford. Join Josh Hutchinson and Sarah Jack of End Witch Hunts nonprofit for an engaging presentation on how descendants and researchers are breathing life into the story of the Connecticut witch trials with fragmented evidence.
Learn how the collaborative efforts between descendants, historians, and community leaders fueled the Connecticut Witch Trial Exoneration Project and the historic passage of House Joint Resolution 34 which formally absolved and apologized for the injustice. Finally, explore ongoing community remembrance initiatives including the Connecticut Witch Trial History Trail, Visit CT Haunted History Trail, The Thing About Witch Hunts podcast, and public engagement events.
Bios
Josh Hutchinson
Josh Hutchinson is a descendant of people accused of witchcraft and of people who accused others of witchcraft. He is the co-host of three history podcasts with Sarah Jack: The Thing About Witch Hunts, The Thing About the Salem Witch Trials, and Salem Witch Trials Daily. He is also a co-founder of the Connecticut Witch Trial Exoneration Project, the team lead of the Massachusetts Witch-Hunt Justice Project, and a co-founder of End Witch Hunts, America’s only nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the continuation of violence related to witchcraft accusations.
Sarah Jack
Sarah Jack is a documented descendant of victims of witch trials held in Salem, Boston, and Hartford, including Rebecca Nurse, Mary Easty, Mary Hale, and Winifred Benham. She co-hosts three history podcasts with Josh Hutchinson: The Thing About Witch Hunts, The Thing About Salem, and Salem Witch Trials Daily. She co-founded the Connecticut Witch Trial Exoneration Project, and is the Founding Executive Director of End Witch Hunts a nonprofit bridging witchcraft accusation history and its living consequences
