🎉🏆2025 Literary Award Winners: We are spotli 🎉🏆2025 Literary Award Winners: We are spotlighting our Literary Awards all this week!

2025 Richard C. Thomlinson Overall Grand Prize Winner: The Nickerson Family Part 5: Samuel by @nickersonfamilyassociationinc, Debra Lawless Executive Director. Accepted by Nancy Wilkerson Corey.

The Nickerson Family: Part 5 – Samuel, is a landmark volume in the NFA’s ongoing multi-volume genealogy project. Part 5: Samuel documents the descendants of Samuel Nickerson, son of William and Anne, and spans hundreds of families and generations. Rich with detail, biographical sketches, photographs, and source citations, the 600-page volume represents years of meticulous research and collaboration.

The book is the result of the dedicated efforts of a skilled and passionate genealogy team. Leading the research was Gail Blankenau, professional genealogist, co-author, and editor. Nancy Nickerson Corey, head of the NFA’s genealogy committee, contributed research and writing expertise. Kim Herber, genealogist and layout designer, brought a careful eye for both narrative and presentation. Linda Blais, also a writer and co-editor, helped ensure accuracy, clarity, and editorial polish.

Congratulations on their 2025 recognition!

2025 Award for New England Genealogical Resource Publications: The Windsor Locks Canal: Yankee Enterprise & Irish Muscle by J. Christopher Kervick

The Windsor Locks Canal, Yankee Enterprise and Irish Muscle is about people as much it is about events. Not only does Kervick tell the story of the Windsor Locks Canal in far greater detail than it has been told before, but he humanizes the Irish Canal laborers along the way. In many instances, he introduces the reader to these remarkable men by name, the result of over 20 years of painstaking research to answer the basic question, “Who are these unknown laborers to whom we owe so much?”

🎉Congratulations to Chris and his 2025 recognition!

2025 Award for New England Genealogy: Early Families of Middletown, Connecticut, Volume II: 1655-1700 by Reginald W. Bacon & Paula K. Higgins

While growing up, Reginald was unaware of his connections to Middletown, CT. But since his first visit to Godfrey Memorial Library in 1977 he discovered lines of descent from 30 of Middletown’s pre-1700 families. From 2005 to 2018 he served as editor of The Middler, the newsletter/journal of the Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants.

Paula's ancestor, Edwin Hubbard's family, before moving to Ohio, had lived in Middletown, CT for almost two hundred years. That was surprising and eye-opening information to everyone in the family because that information had not been passed. That discovery led her to the Society of Middletown First Settler Descendents, along with their website containing profiles of early settlers which she began contributing to.

In late 2024, a decade-long collaboration between both authors led them to write, Early Families of Middletown, Connecticut - Volume II: 1655-1700, which completed the genealogical and historical survey of early Middletown

🎉Congratulations to Reginald and Paula and their 2025
recognition!

2025 "Tell Your Family Story" Essay Winner: Susan Orred for "Close With A Cigar: Researching My Grandfather ."

Susan writes: "This particular essay was born of a few different inspirations. First, I thank local historian Jeff Murray who saw my Facebook post on the ‘Old Hartford’ page and discovered the Pittsfield connection to my grandfather. The impact of technology on genealogical research has come so far in my lifetime, and while I am grateful to a few ancestors who were also avid genealogists, I could never have amassed the wealth of knowledge I have about those ancestors who were not as well-documented without the availability and accessibility of online research, and the ability to so easily connect with others who have the same research addictions. Most importantly, I needed to humanize a grandfather I knew little about beyond the available documentation. My thanks to The Connecticut Society of Genealogists for selecting my essay for recognition this year."

👏Congratulations to Susan!
