History Brief:
This area, known as Nameaug, was first settled in 1645. In 1649, the inhabitants voted to call the settlement London, although the General Assembly recommended the name, Faire Harbor. In 1651 the town petitioned the Assembly that the name should be London but the Assembly bounded the land under the old name, Nameaug. For several years it was variously referred to as London Town and New London. In 1657/8 the Court relented as said, The Plantation at Pequet is named by this Court, New London. Town vital records begin 1690. Barbour collection records cover 1646-1854.
