History Brief:
In April of 1637, Rev. John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton sailed to Boston with a company of Londoners and Herefordshiremen to establish a new colony. When reports began to come back to Boston after the defeat of the Pequots regarding the lands along Long Island Sound, Eaton led an expedition to Queenapioc (Quinnipock, Quinnipiac) in September of 1637 and left seven men to winter over. The Company returned in spring of 1638 to settle, and obtained deeds from the sachems Momaugim on November 24 and Montowese on December 11. The first Articles for the gathering of the church were promulgated on August 22, 1639. A General Court was organized and renamed the settlement New Haven on September 1, 1640. The colony remained independent until 1662, when it was included in the lands granted to Connecticut Colony by the Charter obtained by John Winthrop from King Charles II. The City of New Haven was incorporated in 1784, and in 1895 the town and city government were consolidated. From 1701 to 1873, New Haven was the joint capital of Connecticut with Hartford, and the legislature met in the two towns alternately. Towns incorporated from New Haven are Wallingford (including Cheshire, Meriden and a portion of Prospect), 1670; Branford (including North Branford), 1685; Woodbridge (including Bethany), 1784; East Haven, 1785; Hamden, 1786; North Haven, 1786; and Orange (including West Haven), 1822. The stately elms which once lined the main streets have given New Haven the nickname of "the Elm City."
