History Brief:
Although the General Assembly in 1707 had made a grant to Fairfield of a tract extending fourteen miles north of Danbury, the land was not settled until in 1729 deeds were obtained from the local Schaghticokes by twelve proprietors after five years of negotiations. The proprietors subsequently in about 1736-37 made a division of their rights and surveyed the tract. Prior to that, in 1731, an "oblong" along the western boundary was ceded to New York in the settlement that established the current state boundary. The town was incorporated in 1740, but it was not until 1742 that ecclesiastical societies were established: one in the "upper seven miles," now the Town of Sherman, and one in the "lower seven miles," the current Town of New Fairfield. Sherman was incorporated in 1802. The Town Records burned in 1867; thus there are no entries in the Barbour Collection. Current records thus date from 1867.
