History
Brief:
Attawanhood, the third son of Uncas, died in May 1676, and bequeathed a tract of land here to Major John Mason and other Norwich men. Settlement began about 1692 as part of Windham. Sites were selected for three villages: Hither-Place (Windham Center), Pond-Place (Mansfield Center) and Willimantic. Mansfield was separated from Windham and incorporated as a town in 1702. Town vital records begin 1756.
