History
Brief:
The second John Winthrop obtained a large tract called Quinebaug Country from the Indians in 1653. Liberty was given him in 1671 to establish a plantation but settlement did not begin until 1693. In May 1708 the General Court granted the privileges of a town and the Governor selected the name Killingly (often spelled Kellingly). For many years the inhabitants called the town, Aspinock, but Killingly prevailed. Town vital records begin 1700. Barbour collection records cover 1708-1850.
