As early as 1633 the Dutch had established a trading post called Good Hope at Suckiage on the Connecticut River. After some early explorations, the Reverends Thomas Hooker and Samuel Stone led their congregation in 1635 on an overland trek from Newtown, Massachusetts, to establish a plantation at nearly the same place. The settlement was first called Newtown but on 21 February 1636/7 the General Court changed the name to Hartford. Town vital records begin 1852. Barbour collection records cover 1635-1855.
