History Brief:
On 29 September 1639, Henry Whitfield and five other English planters signed an agreement with Shaumpishuh, the female chief of the Quinnipiacs. The agreement, signed in Robert Newmans barn in Quinnipiac (New Haven), conveyed, Menunketuck, the land between Kuttawoo (East River) and Oiockcommock (Stony Creek). On 6 July 1643, the General Court at New Haven changed the name of Menunketuck to Guilforde. Town vital records begin 1639. Barbour collection records cover 1639-1850.
