Captain Daniel Patrick and Robert Feaks purchased the land in this area from the Indians on 16 July 1640. This was ostensibly done as part of the New Haven Colony but in 1642 they sought protection by the Dutch and placed themselves under the control of the Governor General of New Netherlands. The Dutch called the area Petukquipaug. Greenwich became a manor with Patrick and Feaks as patrons. This ended on 6 October 1656 when the inhabitants petitioned the New Haven Colony and were made part of Stamford. The settlement did not flourish due to guerilla warfare and other troubles until 1660. The Court established Greenwich as a township on 11 May 1665. Greenwich was made a borough in 1854 and consolidated as a town in 1932. Town vital records begin 1640. Barbour collection records cover 1640-1848. |
