Glastonbury abuts the Connecticut River on the eastern bank and originally belonged to Wethersfield on the opposite side. The land was acquired in a series of purchases from 1636 to 1650 from the Wangunk Indians who called it Nabuc. After many years, the difficulty of crossing the river to attend church caused the settlers to petition the General Court to be made a town. The petition was granted provided a settled minister was obtained. The Court named the town Glassenbury on 22 June 1692 and Rev. Timothy Stevens arrived in July. In 1786 the name became Glastenbury and in 1870 the town voted to adopt the name, Glastonbury. Town vital records begin 1693. Barbour collection records cover 1690-1854. The "founding date" has been the subject of controversy (See the Historic Timeline).
