History
Brief:
In 1642 a surveying error made this region a part of the Massachusetts Colony. This area was known as Freshwater as early as 1648. In May 1683 a petition was sent to Boston and Enfield was made a town. A new survey in 1713 still gave this land to Massachusetts. Enfield, along with Woodstock, Suffield and Somers, petitioned in 1747 to become part of the Connecticut Colony. In May 1749 they were admitted and in May 1753 were constituted Ecclesiastical Societies. Town vital records begin 1688.
