History Brief:
On 5 August 1644, Thomas Gregson of New Haven received a grant of 133 acres at Solitary Cove, now Morris Cove. An iron works was established at Great Pond, now Lake Saltonstall, in 1655 and the local settlement was referred to as Iron Works Village. The Court of 1667 granted limited autonomy as a "village", which liberties were set out in 1680, among them the right to set up a Society. East Haven was incorporated as a town distinct from New Haven in May 1785. In 1881, the Morris Cove, Grannis Corners and Fair Haven Heights districts were ceded back to New Haven. Town vital records begin 1906, with some indexes going back to 1850. Barbour collection records cover 1700-1852.
