The first settlement here was at Creek Row about 1670 on land called, Machimoodus, by the Indians. In 1697, the inhabitants petitioned the Court for a Society separate from Haddam, but were turned down. The petition was renewed in October 1700 and was granted. In May 1734 East Haddam was incorporated as a town and set off from Haddam. Town vital records begin 1743. Barbour collection records cover 1743-1857.
