History Brief:
Deacon Josiah Dewey and William Clarke acquired land here in 1669 and 1670 from the Nehantics and Mohegans. This area on the Hop River was known as Lebanon Crank. It became a Society within Lebanon on 28 February 1715 and was incorporated as the town of Columbia in May 1804. Town vital records begin 1804. Barbour collection records cover 1804-52.
