This is one of the towns formed from 1635 Saybrook Colony. Settled about 1690, this section was the Pattaquonk Quarter of Saybrook. In 1739, the Parish of Chester was established. It was separated from the town of Saybrook and incorporated in 1836 as the town of Chester. Town vital records begin 1847. Barbour collection records cover 1836-52.
