History
Brief: |
There may have been settlers here on the Quinebaug River as early as 1690. Major John Fitch of Norwich bought land in 1697 from Owaneco, the son of Uncas, Sachem of the Mohegans. Fitch named the plantation, Kent. On 14 October 1703, the General Assembly named the town Canterbury and set a line dividing it from Plainfield. Town vital records begin 1703. Barbour collection records cover 1703-1850.
