In the summer of 1634 some inhabitants of Watertown, Massachusetts removed to Connecticut under the leadership of John Oldham and built houses at Pyquag on the Connecticut River. The name Pyquag was apparently dropped in 1635 in favor of the name Watertown. In 21 February 1636/7 the name of Watertown was changed to Wethersfield. Town vital records begin 1634.
