History
Brief: |
Washington is located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in western Connecticut. Joseph Hurlbut settled the eastern section, part of Woodbury and known as Judea Parish, in 1734. The western section, part of New Milford and Kent and known as the Ecclesiastical Society of New Preston, was established in 1753. The inhabitants petitioned to be incorporated as the town of Hampden. In January of 1779, the General Assembly incorporating the parishes of Judea and New Preston and taking from the towns of Woodbury, Litchfield, Kent and New Milford, established the town as Washington, in honor of Gen. George Washington as this was the first town incorporated in CT after the Declaration of Independence. Town vital records begin 1779.
Barbour collection records cover 1779-1854.
