History Brief:
The General Court of Massachusetts granted Captain Thomas Clarke of Boston land here in 1657. The Captain and his heirs mined black lead and graphite deposits here. This area was known as Union Right and Union Land. The western section was called the Land of Content. This section was sold in 1719 and 1720 for the support of Yale College. On 10 October 1734, this area became the town of Union. Town vital records begin 1734. Barbour collection records cover 1734-1850.
