This land was included in that claimed by the Warwick Patentees. In 1649, William Cheseborough of Seacunck (Rehoboth, MA) built a house in the section called Wequetequock, which he believed to be part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Ownership continued in dispute between Massachusetts and Connecticut for many years. In 1658, the Commissioners of the United Colonies ruled that the Pequot lands west of the Mystic River belonged to Connecticut and those east of the river (including present Stonington, North Stonington and part of Westerly) belonged to Massachusetts. The community was known as Mystic but the Court in Boston named he town Southertown. The town continued part of Massachusetts until 22 April 1622 when the Connecticut Charter set its eastern boundary at the Pawcatuck River, placing Southertown in CT. On 12 October 1665, the town of Southertown was renamed Mystic. In May 1666, the town was again renamed and given the name Stonington. Town vital records begin 1658. Barbour collection records cover 1658-1854.
