History
Brief: |
This area was part of the Western Lands (Goshen, Colebrook, Kent, Hartland, Norfolk, Canaan, Cornwall, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Barkhamsted, Harwinton, Winchester and New Hartford) made over to Hartford and Windsor in 1686 to save them from being taken by the Royal Gov. Andros. This area was surveyed with Salisbury in May 1732 and named, Township N.S. The land was sold at auction in New Haven in 1738. The inhabitants formed a town and called it, Sharon. The Court at New Haven recognized the town but did not authorize the name. Nevertheless, over time the name, Sharon, was accepted. Town vital records begin 1739. Barbour collection records cover 1739-1865. |
