History Brief:
This land was on the Naugatuck River in the northern part of the town of Derby. The earliest settler in this section built a house at Rock Rimmon near the Falls in 1651. The area was called Naugatuck and later Chusetown for Joseph Mauwehu, a local Indian known as Chuse. The Indian reservation was purchased in 1731. In 1836, the area known as Humphreysville in honor of General David Humphreys who established a woolen industry at the Falls in 1803, was incorporated as a borough of Derby. Application to become the town of Humphrey was made in 1850 but there was local opposition and a last-minute change was made and the town was named, Seymour, in honor of then Gov. Thomas Seymour. A portion of Seymour was incorporated into Beacon Falls in 1871. Town vital records begin 1850.
