Brief: Proprietors of Fairfield claimed to have purchased this land in 1639. In 1687 the Court allowed 200 acres in a part called Lonetown to Capt Cyprian Nichols who settled there in 1711. In 1714, Capt. John Read drew up an unusual agreement with the local Sachem, Chickens Warrups, a Mohawk, to create Lonetown Manor or the Manor of Chickens with Chickens as the Lord of the Manor and himself as tenant. The General Assembly didnt buy it and ordered the land sold at auction with Chickens and Read to receive some land at Scattacook (Kent). The Parish of Reading, named in honor of Capt. Read, was established in May 1729. In May 1767 the town was created with the spelling of the town name changed to Redding. Town vital records begin 1767. Barbour collection records cover 1767-1852.
