History Brief:
In 1648, the outlands of Saybrook were divided into three "quarters," one being the east side of the river. Matthew Griswold is long recognized as the first settler in this area, in 1645 in what is now the Black Hall area. On 10 May 1663, the Deputies of Saybrook presented to the General Court their intention to set up a second plantation on the east side of the Connecticut River. On 13 February 1665, the Plantation of Lyme was established and in May 1667, the Court incorporated it as the town of Lyme. This, the original area of settlement of the town, was set off as South Lyme in 1855 and renamed in 1857 as the town of Old Lyme. Town vital records begin 1855; previous records are found at the Lyme Town Hall.
